I came across the idea of Land Snorkeling in Backpacker Magazine. An article talked about a small movement of people who have translated the idea of snorkeling into their way of hiking. A snorkeller dives into the water to see all of the little beautiful details rather than attempting to go from point A to point B. So instead of hiking to get somewhere, the Land Snorkeller does more meandering and wondering at all of nature rather than trudging to the next checkpoint.
I have often embraced this mindset, but never really had a name for it. I just called it enjoying the outdoors. Naming it though, seems to give an outing some intention in a way hiking or just going for a walk doesn’t. With that in mind, I went Land Snorkeling at a pond near my house during my lunch break.
